Sheriff's Office Citizens Academy

The Shenandoah County Sheriff's Office is excited to offer this new and unique program called the Citizens Academy. The daily program is outlined below with a total of eight classes that are set in the evenings. The information will be informative and exciting as you will be able to interact with Sheriff's staff and Auxiliary members that are getting their certification during the same instruction. This is an in-depth look on topics such as laws of arrest, search and seizer, and use of force to name a few. Classes will show you the challenges facing law enforcement today. You may have thought watching a situation unfold or hearing about something "can't you just arrest him"! That very question will be answered along with all the exciting case laws that site how things come to be when it comes to making an arrest.

Another topic that will get your attention will be use of force. Sheriff's Deputies and citizens alike are held to legal standards of what constitutes use of force against another person. This class will educate participants on what you can not do. It will show you all the options and devices that officers have when affecting an arrest. You will have an opportunity to ask questions as a home owner and what you can do to protect you and your family if that terrible day should ever come.

Finally, this is the first time the public has been invited to shoot at our range. Participants will be allowed to bring their own  hand gun and ammunition to the range and shoot one of our courses. This is sure to be a well attended event and would encourage early enrollment as we are limited by size. Participants will receive participation certificates at the end of the program to remind them of all the valuable educational materials received during the program.
